The children are introduced to the basic concepts of rhythm and movement using creative games that expand their individual creativity. They will learn spacial awareness, listening skills, group socialization and structure. They will strengthen their bodies and learn coordination to ready themselves for the next level in dance. Our goal is to make sure we are building the love of dance in each child, nurturing their natural creativity in a fun and loving atmosphere. Additionally, our goal is to awaken interest, enthusiasm and self confidence through dance.
Ballet/Tap Combo introduces rhythm and musicality, fundamentals of ballet and tap skills, weight shifting, and imaginative movements.
Students learn to respect the studio, the teachers and the other students as they discover their coordination, musicality and love of movement. Dancers will perform one routine in the annual recital.
Ballet technique is very technical and is the foundation of ALL dance styles. Ballet is key for all dance styles! Ballet class consists of a strong emphasis on placement, balance, alignment and ballet vocabulary, all while building strength and flexibility. Students are encouraged to take multiple ballet classes to improve upon their growth and training!
Acro is a specialized art of tumbling, contortion and balancing, requiring agility and skillful control of the body. We focus on developing powerful muscles, great flexibility and good balance for our students to safely execute the tricks they are learning. Dedication and passion from our students forms a positive sense of self-reliance in demanding physical situations. This class provides a great range of experiences in which children learn to confidently perform stunts and fly through the air effortlessly!
Hip Hop is one of the most popular styles of dance! Hip hop is both a music genre and a cultural movement developed in NYC in the 70s; since then hip hop has grown to encompass an entire lifestyle that consistently incorporates diverse elements of ethnicity, technology, art and urban life that is ever growing! We use age appropriate hip hop and R & B music, to ensure a family value is in all classes. Students learn the latest moves while developing coordination and musicality, all while having fun and grooving!
Jazz pushes the student to connect briskly to music and movement. Jazz encompasses many styles including traditional jazz, contemporary movement and funk. Jazz is suitable for all ages and levels. Jazz pulls from many traditional styles such as ballet and hip hop and fuses those styles into a new flare. In this class students will increase their flexibility while working to master kicks, tricks, multiple turn combinations and a wide range of leaps.
Lyrical for many teachers and dancers is an ideal vehicle for expressing emotions through movement. It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and naturalistic moves and storytelling. Lyrical is named after it's balletic movement put to the lyrics of non-traditional ballet music. Depending on the given song and choreography, a lyrical piece may or may not be graceful, but will always be expressive and unpredictable, particularly in comparison to ballet and other jazz pieces which may have a more presentational quality. Lyrical is based around the interpretation of the music and routines are based around feeling the movement deeply and expressing the dancers emotion. Lyrical is a great way for your child to develop their own sense of character and work on expressing themselves in their own way!
Musical Theatre focuses on learning proper dance technique while exploring the various dance styles used in Broadway shows. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with Broadway style jazz movement and sometimes character heel techniques. Classes include a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations to work on character development and to build confidence. Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance skills such as connecting with the audience and telling a story through dance and facial expressions. Musical Theater classes are great for growing your sassy dancer!
Contemporary class covers a combination of modern and contemporary techniques. Students will learn how to release into the floor, while pushing against it for stability, learning how to use their bodies in a strong and table fashion. They will play with inversions, work on head-to-tail connectivity, and increase strength and flexibility. Throughout the entire class, students will be working on full body awareness. The curriculum for this class allows beginners to start where they are and returning students to build upon their existing training. Consistency is key to advancement and this class offers a great environment for students to grow and push themselves!
Irish Step Dance is a style of performance dance with its roots in traditional Irish dance. It is generally characterized by a stiff upper body and quick and precise movements of the feet. Students build strength and establish familiarity with the music as they begin with the fundamentals essential to traditional Irish dance, including foot placement, body alignment and basic steps of Irish Dance. Irish Step is a great class for those who want to learn more diverse styles of dance to broaden their horizon! Classes are taught thru the Fitzsimmons School of Irish Dance.
Jumps & Turns builds upon classic ballet and jazz technique with a focus on across the floor progressions to build skill and understanding of leaps, turns, and floorwork. This class will not perform a routine in the school's annual recital.
No previous experience required. Beginners welcome and encouraged!
Time to get bendy! This class focuses on increasing flexibility, improving control and balance, and learning contortion moves. Students must be comfortable with splits and backbends, but you do not need to be a contortionist to attend this class! This class will not perform a routine in the school's annual recital.
In order to truly excel in dance, Ballet training is a necessity. Students will learn proper body alignment, balance, precise footwork and arm placement while increasing flexibility and strength. Technique classes in which students focus on improving skills throughout the year and do not perform a routine in the annual recital.
